Gesso' is 25% more matt than primer, with the same grade filters but a lower sheen. Designed to seal and size, it has a mixture of chalk with the binder which lends to absorbency in the priming coat. The more matt the primer, the stronger the "tooth" and the less flexible it gets. Therefore not recommended for canvases that are due to be rolled.
