Similar to varnish, which is normally sprayed over a (dry-media, i.e. pencil, pastel, charcoal, chalk, graphite etc) finished piece of artwork, to better preserve it and prevent smudging. The fixative is age- and UV-resistant to prevent yellowing and fading caused by exposure to light.
